In one decade, Americans carried both the promise of a more just republic and the weight of its unfinished past. In Spokane, John F. Kennedy’s campaign for president captured a nation eager to believe again in a youthful leadership and public renewal. Across the South, Medgar Evers and his family bore the quiet courage of those who risked everything for equality. And in the streets, Martin Luther King, Jr., marched with his children showing that justice was a duty handed from one generation to another.
